Alaskan Randomiary #4

Fourth part is here and it shows how nicely I’m working here. (How unexpected.) We’ll also meet new fish and play cards. (Maybe)

DAY 16 – 3 HOURS

Starst with 3 sleepy hours in work. Then they sent us home for 3 hours because of no work. “Ships are coming at midnight.” Yeah of course. So I came at midnight and after 30 minutes of work they told me to go sleep again. I don’t even say anything, it’s pointless. It was enaugh of raging and toxicity. I’ll just not make that much money I wanted so I’ll just wait for winter here and maybe on way back I’ll see a bear.

DAY 17 – HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED TO BE HAPPY?

On my morning breakfast walk I saw, for second time here, bluebird. So sick, how little you need to be happy? Today 2,5 hour of boredome because there was really no work at all and then just well known sentence “Come at midnight. Ships are coming and it will be busy.” At least I finished my shift today but last 3 hours I was cleaning baskets. Problem was that I washed everything in 2 hours so I’ve been spinning already clean baskets and cleaned them over and over again, just to do that I’m doing and have those hours done. BTW I met “KJ” from Hawaii who is surfing and snowboarding so we’ve been chating a lot and I was happy.

DAY 18 – NEW GROUP

There was nothing going on today. Maybe just that new group of Ukraine workers showed up. So they can kick out more people after 6 hours of work because there is no fish. I’m going to write postcards, read and sleep. Good night.

DAY 19 – SIIIICK

It was so crazy today. Everybody in the work was just “faster, faster, faster, faster!” As I wrote before, I’m working every day on belt where are filets slowly goning to me and I’m sorting them to 6 baskets depends on weith and quality. Even that it’s worst job for me because I never could decide anything fast and I care too much if it’s good/bad quality, I’m getting bit better. Problem is that when there is so much work like today, I’m really watching just belt and throwing fish blindly to the baskets. When you’re watching only that huge slowly moving snake, your brain is thinking that you’re also moving. But he’s also getting informations that you’re standing still. Because of this I’m getting seasick. Everybody else’s head is just spinning but I’m really fucked thanks to my weak stomach. I would like to know how long I can handle it. I made it 16 hours today.

DAY 20 – HAPPY, HOME

Even though I should sleep 4 hours I slept like 1 because of crazy dreams. They kicked most of the people after 5 hours in work today but I made 10 because at the end of the shift I got to something special. But before this I had to survive 5 sick hours. I told my boss (again) that I’m really fucked but he’s keeping me there because he don’t want any Africans on my possition because they’re not working. Instead of some help he slowed belt which din’t help to my problem at all maybe it made it even worse. Because before it was piece next to the piece on the belt but now it was just huge mountain of filets.

But then came boat with “HALIBUT” (The most expensive fish I’ve been working with. Big, flat fish with price 6$/pound. So bigger fish cost the same as our 14 day paycheck.) There wasn’t so much work so they sent almost everybody home and only bosses and few other workers stayed. They’ve been cutting off deffects milimeter by milimeter because here every gram counts. I was scaling and sorting again and from me everything went straight to freezer. Many people worked almost no hours here because we have so strong storm here that it’s raining salt rain here. Wind is so strong that it lifts watter from sea high in the sky and it just rains and rains and rains. It’s crazy. Forklift drivers are evacuating everything they can from shore. All boats are tied to the port with everything they’ve got. Shutter doors are baricated with everything what was around to not be broken down by wind. Outside doors must be opened by 2 people and you have to straight close them otherwise they’ll fly away. You really don’t want to be on the boat right now. Workers are scared to walk between 2 buildings. I don’t know why but when I feel all that power of wind, watter, nature and raging sea, I’m super happy and laughing like mad man. For first time here I feel like “home”. It reminds me power of mountains and snow….

DEN 21 – FUJAVICE

Storm is still playing it’s games with sea so there is no ship coming which means that we have no work to do. I want to shoot some timelapse of fast flowing clouds because it’s so crazy. But they didn’t let me go in the office again because “It’s better for your own safty.” Come on, I know what is/not safe for me. I’m not little kid which needs to be dragged around by hand outside. I got their point but don’t like the way they told it to me. I would also like to know when they’ll let me go to do anything. We wanted to go with Martin to church for few table tenis games but we met rest of the group and planed “Saboteur”. We’re checking what’s in the shop and Jiri is buying Trident Seafoods T-Shirt. (Quite good one.) But then I hear behind me “Do you want some work?” I just turn around and there is foreman. Before anybody else react I’m saying “Of course, that’s why I came here, innit? I gave cards to Bara and went to stuff boxes with frozen 10kg blocs of “Surimi” for 10 hours. That’s it for today. I’m really missing freedom. I also saw awesome hoodie “Best things are wild and free.”. Unfortunately I don’t have any of this here. On my way from work wind stopped….
